The Specialized Telecommunications Assistance Program (STAP) is a voucher program that provides financial assistance for assistive technology to Texas residents with communication barriers that interfere with access to the telephone. STAP offers assistance to help you get specialized telephone equipment to access the telephone network.
If eligible, you can get a voucher from the Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services. It’s important to understand that applications are processed in the order in which they are received at the STAP office in Austin, Texas.
This program is available to individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, as well as those who have a loss of vision, mobility, speech, or cognitive function.
Our STAP Outreach Specialists are available to guide DFW residents through the application process. They have knowledge of a variety of specialized assistive devices and software used by persons with communication difficulties in accessing the telephone. They can help you compare vendors, and select the one that best meets your needs and sells the device authorized on your issued voucher.
STAP Voucher Process:
Complete application with certification by a STAP Specialist.
Provide proof of residence (driver’s license, state id, utility bill, or voter’s registration card).
Wait– Once the two items are sent to the STAP office in Austin, allow approximately 3- 6 months to receive your voucher in the mail.
Contact your STAP Specialist to refer you to a vendor that will accept your voucher in exchange for the device of your choosing.
You may apply for a new voucher every 5 years. Be sure to reach out and contact our specialists again to apply for a new voucher if you received your last voucher before December of 2016.
